Ayrshire Housing – A Pet Friendly Landlord

Owning a pet can have many benefits.  As well as providing companionship, they can help to reduce stress, anxiety and ease feelings of loneliness.

You must ask permission to keep a pet in your home.  You can apply for permission on My Home or speak to your Housing Officer if you need help with this.

Choosing the right pet

If you’re thinking about getting a pet, Blue Cross have published guides on the most popular pets to help ensure that you choose the pet that is right for you and your lifestyle.

Please consider rehoming, rather than buying from a breeder.  The organisations below may be able to help you:

Dogs Trust

It is a legal requirement that dogs be microchipped.  Failure to ensure your dog is microchipped could result in a fine of up to £500.

Cats Protection

Cats Protection can offer a reduced cost neutering service for all cats over 4 months old.  Please visit their website for more information or call 0345 3714 216.

We know that sometimes your circumstances can change and you may no longer be able to care for your pet.  These organisations can also offer your advice and assistance with this.

Financial Assistance

If your pet becomes unwell and you are in receipt of benefits, you may be able to get assistance from the PDSA for the cost of veterinary treatment.

If you are struggling with the cost of feeding your pet, your local Foodbank may be able to provide donated food.

Animal Welfare

The Scottish SPCA can also help if you are looking to rehome a pet or if you have concerns that an animal may be in need.
